The principal aim of the course was to develop human resources together with institutional capacities, offering a thorough understanding of urban theory and best practices to face the increasingly complex challenges relating to social, economic, physical and environmental concerns of land management and informal settlement regularization.
The course was very intensive and stimulated exchange of experience and views, forcing the students to have an active participation and give inputs and academic contributions during the sessions, discussions and case study presentations. The staff involved were Carlos Morales Schechinger, Martim Smolka, Claudio Acioly, Saskia Ruijsink, Banashree Banerjee and Edésio Fernandes, each one covering a specific part of the programme and contributing with specific case studies linked to legal, economic, policy, management and institutional dimensions of the course. In the end, each participant presented an individual action plan and a brief workshop paper describing how the lessons learned during the course can be implemented in their daily activities.
